Featured in this sale are items from United States Navy USN Captain Joseph J. Meyer Jr. who attended Cornell, University Of Rochester and graduated from the Naval Reserve Midshipman School at the University Of Notre Dame in March 1945, and was commissioned an Ensign. Attendance at George Washington University was followed by graduation from Submarine School in 1948.
Captain Meyer served in the submarine REMORA and SCABBARDFISH, was Executive Officer of the submarine SIRAGO and commanded the fast attack submarine BARBEL. In 1966 he commanded Submarine Division SEVENTY-THREE.
He has served two tours in the Office of the Chief Of Naval Operations; 1954-1956 in the Foreign Military Assistance Division and 1963-1965 as Submarine Warfare Evaluator in the Progress Analysis Group. From 1958-1960 he served as Submarine Operations Officer on the Staff Of Commander Antisubmarine Warfare Force, Atlantic. In 1965 he was ordered to the Staff Of Commander Submarine Squadron SEVEN with additional duty as Operations Officer, Submarine Flotilla FIVE. In August 1966 he joined the Staff of Commander Submarine Flotilla FIVE. In August 1966 he joined the Staff Of Commander Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet where he served as instructor in charge of the Prospective Commanding Officers School, and later, as Assistant Chief Of Staff for Operations and Plans where he was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal.
In addition to Submarine School, Captain Meyer is a graduate of the Navy General Line School, Armed Forces Staff College and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.
Captain Meyer assumed command of the KAWISHIWI on 6 May 1969.
Also featured in this sale is the work of a very talented abstract expressionist painter, Jean L. Klafs, who studied with the greats at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles (Notable Alumni: Larry Bell, Edward Ruscha, Llyn Foulkes, Edith Head, Bob Mackie, Milo Baughman) as well as the Santa Fe Institute Of Fine Arts. Additionally she traveled to Israel to study and represent the famous artist Reuven Rubin. These original paintings have been in storage for decades; this is the second phase featuring some of her original artwork.
