Item Details

The Artist: Atsuya Hamada (1931–1986)

As the third son of Shoji Hamada, Atsuya grew up in the center of the Mingei (folk craft) movement. Crucially, he spent time working at the Leach Pottery in St. Ives (1957–1958), which gave his work a distinct blend of Japanese tradition and English slipware techniques. His pieces often feature robust, functional shapes with iron glazes, salt glazes, or simple brushwork. Atsuya's pieces are increasingly sought after due to their relative scarcity caused by his premature death at age 54.
