Biography
Bonnie Lee has had a long and successful sculpting career. She has had a commercial side: her art is displayed in over 100,000 homes worldwide. And she has had a serious side: her art has been featured in numerous museums and has been the cover piece for many fine-art catalogs. Her one-woman shows have been a delight both to her and to their curators.
Through the years, her sculptures have evolved, of course, with a movement towards the use of oil and acrylics and even watercolor to express the sculptures' emotional tones - their passions if you will. Throughout this evolution, though, there has always been her signature delight in colors - vivid and expressive, interactive and exciting.
Some would say that she should make her colors quieter than they are. She just can't do that. Her colors must be bold. They may be complex and intricate and even subtle, but they must be bold. She loves the vibrancy of colors on canvas and clay, their purity, their sense of mystery.
While her use of colors and clay is unplanned, she does a lot of reading and research before she ever puts brush to canvas or hands to clay. The research stays in the background, undoubtedly guiding her, but not consciously. At some point in her process, the colors and the forms and the research all come together and, like a jigsaw puzzle, the piece comes alive.
Hours of labor remain as she cleans and adds details, but these are happy hours. Her sculpture has developed a soul, and her own soul feeds on it.
